Rational Wives and Pillow Dolls
Philosophy for Shitty Husbands: Perspectivism
Creative Commons Zero
I’m a philosopher with a shitty husband (SH), and I got lost in Matt Frey’s blog last week. Matt argues that marital conflict is often caused by men (don’t take the gender words too seriously, he doesn’t, I don’t) who cannot or do not understand that their wives have an equally legitimate but different worldview. Time to talk about perspectivism!
I think doing philosophy can indeed help all of us improve our relationships. Since Matt could have just given up and gotten himself a pillow doll like this guy, I’m excited that he’s trying to become a better person, or at least, less of an a**hole. What a marvelous application of philosophy.
I believe that if everyone used philosophy in their relationships, people would be happier. But people don’t know what philosophy is, or maybe they don’t like it. Probably because they think it is abstract. Removed. Needlessly convoluted. Inapplicable to daily life or real problems. Arcane. For nerds.
If we had to study Protagoras in high school, the entire world would be a better place.
