Consistent Contradiction

Umair, thanks again for another sophisticated essay. I have a question. You suggest that Biden doesn't come after Manchin and Sinema in a heavy handed way because he's scared or doesn't care or doesn't get it. Another possibility is that Biden seems to believe, like an Enlightenment dude, that rationality will win the day. He suggests in his speeches and statements that we can be bipartisan, that Republicans will come around, etc. etc. I think his mistake is that he thinks Republicans also would like to save the country and democracy, and with a shared goal and good intentions, rationality will prevail. But they don't want to save democracy and their version of saving the country feels like something Margaret Atwood wrote. Now, maybe this falls under your option of "he doesn't get it," but I think he's trapped in Enlightenment thinking, and his commitment to rationality is failing him because he's fighting irrational foes. What do you think?
